What if Jesus Meant all that Stuff? – A Rebuttal

INTRODUCTION

Recently a friend on Facebook posted on article from Esquire magazine titled “What if Jesus meant all that Stuff?” by a “Christian” author named Shane Claiborne. The article was basically an apology to Shane’s unbelieving friends for the actions of Christians to reach them for Christ. He condemns the preaching of a street preacher, who speaks of hell and judgment, as hateful and un-Christ like.

There are two common errors when proclaiming the Gospel. The first is to proclaim only God’s judgment on wrong behavior, as if to say “you’re going to hell unless you’re good”. This is a faulty gospel message because the Bible teaches that all of us are guilty of breaking God’s law[1].  The Bible teaches that none of us are good[2]. We are all sinful, from the most pious to the most deranged person we can think of, we are all sinners. The Bible also teaches that the “wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”[3] There is no way to be good enough to go to heaven on our own, and that is why we need a Savior[4].

The second is to proclaim only God’s grace and love, as if there are no consequences to behavior or beliefs. Jesus himself told us that the way to salvation was narrow[5]. The way to eternal life is not the broad way but very exclusive. Those who preach only the love of God want to ignore the teachings of Jesus by denying that judgment for sin is coming.

While some street preachers are guilty of the first, Shane is guilty of the second. His focus is solely on the grace of God, irrespective of a person’s religious beliefs, while ignoring the reason for the grace God extended to man. Because of this focus Shane’s gospel is a social gospel, which is no gospel at all. The social gospel sounds good to the ears but is a denial of sound biblical doctrine. It is a denial of the Gospel (Good News) itself.

CRITIQUE

That was an interesting article by Shane. He made a lot of points, but I believe he comes to some very wrong conclusions.
He starts out by talking about the street performers and how great they were to listen to and watch and then contrasts that with the “hateful” street preacher warning people about hell. While there are those street preachers that only preach about the judgment of God, and not about the grace of God, it is also wrong to only preach about the grace of God without showing people why God extended that grace.

Shane is a perfect example of the modern gospel. Come to Jesus, he will make you health, wealthy and wise. He will solve all your problems and make your journey on earth better.

Shane misquotes scripture when he says ““It was Jesus who taught us to pray that God's will be done "on earth as it is in heaven." On earth.”[6] First of all, Satan does not care if you and I go to hell as a Police officer or a prostitute. He doesn’t care if we go to hell as an atheist or a creation scientist. He doesn’t care if we go to hell as Pro Choice activist or a Pro Life activist. All he wants is for us not to repent and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior which is our only means of salvation. If he can get us to believe anything else then he has succeeded.

What Shane didn’t say was the first part of the verse in Matthew 6,  “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.[7] When Christ Jesus comes to rule and reign and establish his kingdom on earth, then God’s will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven. That is what we pray for and that is when it will ultimately be fulfilled.

He is correct when he says “the Christian Gospel has as much to do with this life as the next”[8]. It does have much to do about this life, and that is for those of us, who are true believers of Christ, to obey the commands of Christ when he said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."[9] That command is our only mission in life as believers. Whether we are at home in the states or abroad, it is to reach people with the gospel of Christ.

Let me share an illustration of the Gospel message Shane is sharing and which, like I said earlier, is such a modern gospel message. Imagine you’re a passenger on a plane and the stewardess comes to you and tells you there is a parachute under the seat and asks you to put it on. You ask her if the plane is ok, and she says, “Oh yes the plane is fine but if you put on the parachute it will improve your flight.” So reluctantly you decide to see if the stewardess’ claims are true and you strap on the parachute. You notice it is difficult to sit up with the parachute on, but because of the promised flight improvement you decide to try it for a while. Then you notice the other passengers are looking at you and snickering. They are making fun of you. You begin to slink down in your seat from embarrassment. Finally you can take it no longer and you remove the parachute and throw it to the ground. You’re angry with the person who convinced you to put it on, and rightfully so. It will be a long time before someone will get that thing on you again.

Just like the illustration above is the gospel message that if you come to Jesus, he will improve your life. You will be healthy, wealthy, and wise. You will be much happier if you come to Jesus. So when a person is told this gospel message they may give this “Jesus thing” a try; and what will they get? The trouble that Jesus promised we would get as believers living in this world; "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."[10]

Now imagine you’re on the flight again, but now the captain comes over the PA and says, “There is a mechanical problem with the engines on the plane and we are going to crash land. There is a parachute under every seat. Please place them on because at any moment we are going to begin jumping out of the plane.” Now you are going to place that parachute on without delay. You aren’t worried about what the other passengers think because you know at any moment you will be jumping out of the plane. The thought of crashing or jumping without a parachute consumes you. You’re thankful for the parachute, and for the captain who warned you to put it on.

So it is with the true gospel of Jesus Christ which says you must be born again. You must repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ or you will die in your sins. If you die in your sins you will spend eternity in hell. Unlike the description of the preacher given by Shane as unloving and hateful, the preacher is doing the most loving thing he can do by warning those around him to flee the coming wrath, to repent of their sins, and to trust in Jesus.

I’m sure that preacher has a family and a lot of other things he would like to be doing on the weekend rather than preaching to un-listening ears or worldly Christians who don’t understand the gospel. But because of his love for Jesus, and his love and concern for the lost he has taken up his cross and followed in Jesus steps by warning sinners to flee the coming wrath.

Almost everyone who lives in the West knows John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This verse has a mutually exclusive statement in it. It says “whoever believes in him shall not perish”. What about those who do not believe? It is implied in this verse as whoever does not believe will perish. But it is also explicitly stated two verses later, “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”[1]

Shane compared the street preacher to the priest in the story of the Good Samaritan. Yet if you think about it, it was Shane who walked by the street vendors and musicians with no care or thought to their ultimate destiny. He had no worries about them going to hell for their sins. He had no convictions to warn sinners. His only condemnation came for the man who loves them enough to warn them to repent.

What is “scandalous” is Shane’s apathy toward the lost, and in his last paragraph, he reveals why. He believes all are saved including unbelievers. Therefore he has no conviction to convert or teach anyone. He has no desire to follow in the steps of Jesus who came to seek and save the lost.

AHMADINEJAD: WORLD FORCES MUST STRIVE TO ANNIHILATE ISRAEL!

AHMADINEJAD: WORLD FORCES MUST STRIVE TO ANNIHILATE ISRAEL!:
AHMADINEJAD: WORLD FORCES MUST STRIVE TO ANNIHILATE ISRAEL!

by Joanna Paraszczuk
In Ramadan speech to Ambassadors from Islamic countries, Iranian President says “horrible Zionist current” has been managing world affairs for 400 years, adds that liberating Palestine would solve all world problems.
In a speech published on his website, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the ultimate goal of world forces must be the annihilation of Israel.
Speaking to Ambassadors from Islamic countries ahead of ‘Qods Day’ (‘Jerusalem Day’), an annual Iranian anti-Zionist event established in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini and which falls this year on August 17, Ahmadinejad said that a “horrible Zionist current” had been managing world affairs for “about 400 years.”
US Congress passes ‘strongest’ Iran sanctions yet!

‘If I were Iranian, I’d be fearful of the next 12 weeks’
Repeating traditional anti-Semitic slurs, the Iranian President accused “Zionists” of controlling the world’s media and financial systems.
It was Zionists, he said, who were “behind the scene of the world’s main powers, media, monetary and banking centers.”
“They are the decision makers, to the extent that the presidential election hopefuls [of the USA] must go and kiss the feet of the Zionists to ensure their election victory,” he added.
Ahmadinejad added that “liberating Palestine” would solve all the world’s problems, although he did not elaborate on exactly how that might work.
“Qods Day is not merely a strategic solution for the Palestinian problem, as it is to be viewed as a key for solving the world problems,” he said.
He added: “Anyone who loves freedom and justice must strive for the annihilation of the Zionist regime in order to pave the way for world justice and freedom.”
The Iranian President said that Israel reinforced “the dominance of arrogant powers in the region and across the globe” and that Arab countries in particular – he cited Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, Syria and Turkey – were affected by Israel’s “plots.”
Ahmadinejad, who has called the Holocaust a myth, has previously called for Israel’s annihilation, in a 2005 speech in which he used a Persian phrase that translates literally as “wiped off the page of time.”

HeartChanger.com Feedback about "180"

We wanted to share with you the following feedback we received this week from a woman who viewed "180"—and decided not to abort her baby! Thank you for your efforts to "rescue the perishing" by pointing people to "180." Your labors are not in vain!     http://www.heartchanger.com/
You won't like me very much after reading this, but that's ok. You wanted my feedback, so here it is. I've had 2 abortions, and I am going for another one next week. If you really thought this would make me do a 180, you are sadly mistaken. Comparing what Hitler did, to abortion is absurd. It's like trying to compare fire and water, you can't. This movie made me very angry. Wow, Ray, wow where did you get this idea? Pull it out of some hat with ideas people gave you? It's a horribly cruel trick, to try and change people's minds. I am smarter than that. Using the god factor means nothing. There is no god. There is no heaven or hell, and even if there was I do not care. It's very judgmental to say there is never a reason to abort a pregnancy. This has got to be one of the worst films I have come across. Keep your god, and your religion. Quit trying to make people do a 180. It IS a woman's choice. ~Linda

Linda, Thanks for writing and sharing your thoughts. I do appreciate that. Someone came to visit us yesterday who watched the movie last October (that’s one of our production crew in the picture—holding the fruit of “180”). If you live in Southern California, please come and visit. We would take you to lunch, if you wish. Thanks again. Best wishes, Ray Ray,

I am not sure how much this will mean after the email I sent this past week, but I wanted to apologize for the insensitive and and rude email, directed towards you. Please forgive me. I get very angry easily. This movie made me extremely angry. I had no idea it was a Christian film. I am going to be completely honest here, I've been atheist for most of my life, and as far as I'm concerned I will die atheist. I was not expecting an email back. I am 27 years old. Someone on the street was passing out the 180 movie last Monday. They asked me if I wanted one. I said, what is it about? They said, about the holocaust. I said, interesting (I've always loved history). I brought it home, and watched it on Wednesday. I was really liking the film until you started talking about abortion. Like I said, I've had two previous. When you got to the part about God, I became even more angry. I hate any thing that has to do with God, about God, by god...and this is another reason I was so hateful in my email. I did not tell you the truth, in my last email. I was supposed to have the abortion this past Friday. Not this week. When I opened your email, with the attached picture of the beautiful baby...I could not get her out of my head. I tried pushing her out of my mind, but couldn't. I said to myself, Why do I feel so guilty? Friday, I was driving with my boyfriend to the clinic, and the little smiling face of her, was permanently cemented in my head. I said to my boyfriend, I can't do this. I've got to go home. We turned around before we reached the clinic. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I started crying. My boyfriend thought I was nuts! I cried in bed the rest of that night. The memories of my past two abortions I had, came flooding back. I would have two girls right now, who would be both 9 & 6. I knew they were going to be girls. When you said, "It's ok to kill a baby in the womb when...?" I couldn't answer it. Everything I emailed you, was an attempt to make myself feel better. I really had no good reason for aborting the girls. I've put off the abortion for now, and I will tell you, I have never been confronted like that. I don't think that I can go through with a 3rd abortion. I will admit this movie makes you think, in my case, it made me think too much...and I did not like it. I hated it. I hope you understand where I am coming from. I hope you'll excuse my hot-headed email. I am sorry. ~ Linda.    (P.S. Linda gave permission to make this public.)

ANTI-ISRAEL EVENTS AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL

ANTI-ISRAEL EVENTS AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL:
ANTI-ISRAEL EVENTS AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL

by Rachel Hirshfeld (IsraelNationalNews)
There are a number of e-mail notifications being circulated at Columbia University Law School, as well as various departments and clinics within the school, announcing official upcoming anti-Israel events, according to IsraelMatzav.
American-Israeli “human rights” lawyer Emily Schaeffer and member of the Yesh Din NGO spoke at the prestigious law school on March 27, claiming that Israeli “human rights violations” include cases of “torture, targeted killings, and the use of white phosphorus.” Yesh Din is funded almost entirely by foreign donations, and provided testimony against the Israel Defense Forces in the Goldstone Report. The organization says its mission is “to oppose the continuing violation of Palestinian human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory… documenting and disseminating accurate and up-to-date information about the systematic violation of human rights in the OPT, by raising public awareness of such violations, and by applying public and legal pressures on government agencies to end them.”
In addition, an event titled, “Disruption of Normal Life in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” which is expected to accuse Israel of “home demolitions” and “illegal construction” is scheduled to take place March 29. The event’s flyer proclaims, “Palestinians maintain that the demolitions stem from a discriminatory planning and zoning regime that favors Israeli settlers.”
Furthermore, university students who submitted reports to the United Nations Special Procedures Committee regarding the “human rights situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem,” are to engage in a “lunchtime discussion in which they will share some of their research and experiences… They will discuss issues affecting everyday life for Palestinians including: housing and zoning schemes, forced evictions and displacement, and discriminatory land policy.”
Similarly, Professor Katherine Franke, who recently returned from a trip to the region, where she was helping ‘Palestinian’ women establish a Women’s Committee within the Palestinian Bar Association, is scheduled to speak about the “pressing Gender Justice issues,” in the “West Bank” and what it means to be a feminist in the West Bank.”
“The Ethics of Pinkwashing: LGBT Rights in Israel/Palestine,” scheduled to take place on April 4th, is meanwhile expected to accuse Israel of “pinkwashing” and committing crimes of discrimination against the homosexual population in Israel.
Columbia University is widely known to be a hotspot for anti-Israel programming and activities, and has sponsored numerous events aimed at de-legitimizing the Jewish State. It facilitates academic, economic and cultural boycotts against the State of Israel. The university’s Edward Said was photographed throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers guarding the border with Lebanon. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was invited to speak at the university in 2007.

WHO MARGINALIZED THE PALESTINIANS?

WHO MARGINALIZED THE PALESTINIANS?:
Who Marginalized the Palestinians?

By Jonathan S. Tobin (Commentary magazine)
For decades, the chattering classes have been working hard to teach us that the central issue of the region was not the Shia-Sunni conflict or the struggle for freedom by Arabs longing to rid themselves of autocratic monarchs or dictators. The belief in the centrality of the Palestinian issue was so strong that every other consideration had to be subordinated to the cause of trying to assuage the anger of the Muslim world at their plight. But in the past year, the main subjects of discussion have been the Arab Spring revolts and the debate over how best to stop the Iranian nuclear threat. The result is that the world is getting on with its business these days without obsessing about the Palestinians. Even President Obama, who had picked an annual fight with Israel, chose this year to abandon his usual attempt to pressure Israel into concessions to the Palestinians.
All of which has left the Palestinians and their foreign cheerleaders mighty upset. As one Palestinian told the New York Times today, “The Arab world is busy. The Palestinians are becoming secondary.” The question is who’s responsible for this state of affairs? Predictably, the Palestinians blame everyone but themselves. Yet if they want the answer, they need only look in the mirror.
Having refused Israeli peace offers of a state including a share of Jerusalem three times from 2000 to 2008 and with the Palestinian Authority now allying itself with the Islamists of Hamas, the Palestinians have effectively painted themselves into a diplomatic corner. Though many, including some Israelis, expected their attempt to get the United Nations to grant them independence without first making peace with Israel to be a diplomatic “tsunami,” it turned out to be a dud. Even their erstwhile supporters in Europe and the Third World largely abandoned them. Though many continue to pay lip service to their cause, there is a widespread realization that whatever sympathy one may feel for their plight, there is no helping people who won’t or can’t help themselves.
While a campaign for more pressure on Israel continues on the left, even the Obama Administration, which did more to tilt the diplomatic playing field in the Palestinians’ favor than any of its predecessors, has discovered their efforts in that direction went for naught. All of Obama’s initiatives to push the Israelis to give in on Jerusalem, settlements and the 1967 borders have been rendered moot by the Palestinian refusal to negotiate. At this point, and with his campaign staff worried about shoring up his popularity in an election year, any further attention paid to the Palestinians is not only bad policy but also a waste of time. Though the Palestinians’ erstwhile European friends have no such worries, even they have figured out there are other more pressing issues.
Complaining about the attention given to the possibility that the Arab Spring is turning into a despotic winter or the worries about Iranian nukes (which are largely shared by both Israelis and most neighboring Arab states) does the Palestinians little good. But it is worthwhile pointing out that the notion of Palestinian centrality was always absurd. The Arab world did its best to keep the conflict alive and refused to resettle Palestinian refugees the way Israel did a nearly equal number of Jewish refugees from the Middle East after its birth. They promoted the false idea that theirs was the one post-World War II refugee problem that could not be dealt with without redrawing borders and creating a new state. The Arabs cared little for the Palestinians, but their rulers did find the notion of a permanent war to destroy the one Jewish state in the world useful in distracting their people from focusing on their own problems. That cause, which builds on a ready audience for the themes of Jew-hatred among Muslims, lives on, and will, no doubt, be revived by newly empowered Islamists. But the notion that Israel’s existence is a unique injustice around which all the world’s foreign policy problems must revolve is not one that can be credibly sustained when other more obvious problems present themselves.
The Palestinian answer to their dilemma is much like that of a child who threatens to hold his breath until he turns blue. That’s the substance of the Times article in which PA leaders hint darkly at renewed terrorism or a simple refusal to go on governing themselves under the autonomy agreements negotiated with Israel at Oslo. But even if the Palestinians decide to sacrifice their economic well being as well as their children on the altar of never-ending conflict with Israel (something that fits in nicely with the Islamist ideology of the PA’s Hamas partner), there is little the world can do for them unless they decide to recognize the legitimacy of a Jewish state no matter where its borders are drawn. Until they do so — and that seems unlikely for the foreseeable future — they are going to have to reconcile themselves to being marginal players on the world stage rather than the focus of the world’s sympathy.

Why I can't support Ron Paul

The absolutely mind-boggling position of Republican candidate, Ron Paul, who has written the following astounding statements:
"One can understand why (the mullahs) might want to become nuclear-capable, if only to defend themselves and be treated more respectfully," Paul has written. The congressman opposes economic sanctions on Iran. He opposes pre-emptive strikes on Iran. Indeed, Paul has indicated he does not have a problem with Iran acquiring nuclear weapons because he doesn't think mullahs in Iran would actually use such weapons against their enemies. What's more, he has stated that he would not come to Israel's defense if Iran fired nuclear weapons at the Jewish state.

By the way, if you think Iran won't do anything to illuminate Israel, then let me include the words of Ayatollah Khomeini who judged that the elimination of the State of Israel is a religious duty similar to other duties to which all Muslims are committedThe verses of the Quran which discuss the Jews are always applicable, and there is no other people about which the Quran warns the Muslims as much as the Jews

Iran, Turkey, and Russia along with countries from North Africa will come against Israel. You can read about it in Ezekiel  chapters 38 & 39 written around 500 BC. The players in this battle are given there ancient names, but they are still identifiable. By the way, little Israel wins in what appears to be a nuclear exchange, did I mention this was written in 500 BC.

This is the reason I won't support Ron Paul, even though I agree with him economically. To do so would be to go against the Word of God when he told Abraham, the father of the Jewish people,  "And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." Genesis 12:3

What is the Shekhinah?

The Shekhinah is the outward appearances of the presence or glory of God. While it is used like a noun it is actually derived from the verb שָׁכַן shakan or שָׁכֵן shaken (1014d); a prim. root; to settle down, abide, dwell. [i] The vast majority of words in the Hebrew language can be boiled down to a three-consonant root word that contains the essence of the word's meaning.[ii] This is the case with the word Shekhinah. The root of the word gives it its primary meaning “to dwell”.  In each of the following verses it is the word “shaken” that is translated “dwell” or “abide”.
And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell  שָׁכֵן among them. ” (Exodus 25:8, NKJV)
I will dwell שָׁכֵן among the children of Israel and will be their God. ” (Exodus 29:45, NKJV)
You shall put out both male and female; you shall put them outside the camp, that they may not defile their camps in the midst of which I dwell .” ” (Numbers 5:3, NKJV)
then there will be the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the Lord. ” (Deuteronomy 12:11, NKJV)
Then Solomon spoke: “The Lord said He would dwell in the dark cloud. ” (1 Kings 8:12, NKJV)
“Thus says the Lord: ‘I will return to Zion, And dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, The Mountain of the Lord of hosts, The Holy Mountain.’ ” (Zechariah 8:3, NKJV)

The word “shaken” is found 123 times in the Bible and it is translated primarily as dwell or a derivative of that word.
In Exodus the Lord appeared to Moses and the Israelites in a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire. When the tabernacle was built, God appeared as a pillar of cloud and rested “shaken” on it. Moses was unable to enter into the tabernacle because of the visible presence of God.
And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. ” (Exodus 40:35, NKJV)
In the New Testament the ultimate visible presence of God is seen in the Son, Yeshua. He is the ultimate expression of who God is.
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ” (John 14:9, NKJV)
“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; ” (Colossians 2:9, NKJV)
